Saison / Farmhouse Ales

Saison ales were originally brewed seasonally for french speaking farmworkers during the harvest season.  They fermented at higher temperatures and were typically brewed to be had as a refreshing drink during the late summer.  They traditionally have a lower Alcohol by Volume (ABV), around 3.5%, than other ales in order to not incapacitate the farm workers, however modern saison's tend to be between 5 and 8 % ABV.

Saisons ales are typically cloudy and can range from a golden color to an amber hue.  They are typically refreshing, but can sometimes be loaded with hops.  There might also be some spices such as orange zest or ginger added to the beer.  They are also very complex with earthy and yeast flavors.  There really is room for fun differences in Saisons.
