Beers can receive a maximum of 100 points, that come from several different categories. Here is the breakdown:
Appearance - 15 points
Does the beer look like something I want to drink? Does it look like that style of brew should? Points are awarded in this category for color, clarity, head (size, longevity, and lace, aka those pretty little rings that get left behind as you drink your beer.)
Aroma - 15 points
Basically, does it smell like that style should? Is there a nice aroma? The smell is important.
Taste - 50 points
Taste is obviously the most important factor and therefor has the highest points. Is it drinkable? Does it have the flavor of that style of beer? Is there anything that stands out in a positive or negative way? What is the initial flavor like? The middle taste while the beer is in your mouth? How does it finish? Is there an aftertaste?
Drink-ability - 10 points
Some beers are just flat out difficult to choke down, some are easy. Is this beer something you want to drink. This combines previous categories into one. How balanced is the beer? Does the appearance fit the aroma? Does the aroma fit the taste? Does it all match the style? That is drink-ability.
Hip-Hop - 10 points
The cool factor. There are not a lot of points available here, but there are some. Is this a beer you want to be seen with, or are you embarrassed for buying it? Is it a small local beer? Does it have an awesome can or label? Is the brewery dedicated to protecting the environment? Is the beer cool?
